Nuclear Operating License Requirements

Introduction

The course is designed for understanding the major features and regulations of Reactor operation. All major operations like a start-up, shutdown, and on-load conditions are dealt with; including a discussion on potential hazards, the safety aspects and protection devices will be covered. The course describes all aspects from pre-start checks to 100 percent power including fuel rods operations, the inherent stability, and safety systems.

The participants will know the various systems of the nuclear power plant, including those systems which are not accessible in an operating power reactor with fuel and the associated radioactivity. This training will enable them to gain a practical understanding of a nuclear power plant regulations and its components/equipment so that they are well equipped to tackle the tasks including handling emergencies

Objectives

After completion of this course, the participant will be able to understand the following:

    • The fission process
    • How electricity is produced in a nuclear plant
    • Main components of the Nuclear Reactor
    • Reactor Core, Coolant System, Control Rods
    • Pre-Start Checks, Start-up procedure.
    • On-load operation. full power operations
    • Typical monitoring points on the Reactor.
    • Operator’s interface.
    • Operating hazards.
    • Shutdown procedure
    • Protection equipment, alarms, and trips.
    • What is required in managing refuel outages and how nuclear fuel reloads are accomplished

Training Methodology

The goals of each participant are discussed to ensure their needs are fulfilled, as far as possible. Questions are encouraged throughout, particularly at the daily wrap up sessions. This provides opportunities for participants to discuss specific issues and, if possible, find appropriate solutions. Case studies are employed to highlight particular points and appropriate video materials used to illustrate particular conditions.
