Grounding System Design and Testing of Electrical Equipment

Introduction

Grounding of any power system is a must for safety and compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code. This course covers concepts of system grounding and equipment grounding; safety grounding of equipment in substations; IEEE 80 method of safety grounding design; applicable standards and grounding codes; installation, testing, and maintenance of grounding; and also discusses electrical system anomalies. Concepts are illustrated through case studies and hands-on exercises.

  • Fundamentals of grounding
  • System grounding
  • Standards & codes
  • HV substation grounding
  • Grounding system design principles
  • Soil characterization
  • Grounding electrodes types
  • Grounding connectors
  • Ground mat design for safety
  • Installation, testing & maintenance

Objectives

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

    • Apply grounding and bonding basic concepts as per Canadian Electrical Code
    • Appreciate various aspects of power system grounding and use them in your design work
    • Enhance occupational health and safety on your projects by applying the principles of equipment grounding
    • Design grounding system as per the Canadian Electrical Code requirements and National Electrical Code
    • Handle installation, testing and maintenance of grounding issues

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.
